Miseria&Nobiltà
Giacomo Ceruti in XVIII Century Europe
Description
Thirty-six years, more than a generation, passed since the great exhibition that Brescia dedicated to Giacomo Ceruti (Milan, 1698–1767) in 1987. The time has come to undertake further studies on this painter who, with his touching depictions of the humble classes and his penetrating portraits, affirmed himself as one of the most original XVIII Century figurative artists. But this exhibition is not only a matter of dates and anniversaries. Further research on this artist was necessitated by the fact that over these thirty-five years, the knowledge and assessment of the artist’s apport have to some extent radically evolved. Thanks to outstanding loans from Paris, Vienna, Madrid, Gothenburg and many public and private Italian collections, this major monographic exhibition Fondazione Brescia Musei is dedicating to Ceruti on the one hand highlights the artist’s integral role in Lombard “painting of reality,” and on the other underlines the international scope of his production. In an exceptional organized with the J. Paul Getty Museum of Los Angeles this exhibition will take place in Los Angeles on July 18.
