Exhibit
Moroni (1521 -1580)
A portrait of his time
Description
The exhibition at the Gallerie d’Italia of Milan, an Intesa Sanpaolo museum, aims to celebrate Giovan Battista Moroni, an artist from Bergamo and one of the leading interpreters of Lombard Renaissance painting. Mostly known for his innovative work as a portraitist, Moroni was also the creator of important devotional works. Curated by Simone Facchinetti e Arturo Galansino, the exhibition offers an all-encompassing image of the painter, from his beginnings at the Moretto workshop and continuing on with an appraisal of other contemporary artists that were active in the Lombardy area such as Lorenzo Lotto and Gerolamo Savoldo. Greater attention will be given to the many portraits he created, defined as “portraits in action”, modern representations of figures who, through a gesture or glance, come into contact with the viewer, transcending the emotional distance and static nature of official portraiture. The works being exhibited are on loan from both important foreign museums – including the National Gallery of London, the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, the Musée du Louvre in Paris – as proof of the artist’s international standing, as well as prestigious Italian museums – such as the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo and the Brescia Museum Foundation, a partner in the exhibition. The exhibition at the Gallerie d’Italia will travel along a thematic journey beginning with the education of the artist, who worked between the cities of Bergamo and Brescia, moving from his first portraits to the altarpieces, and alongside the numerous paintings other precious artefacts, including drawings, books, gold, medals, armour and fabrics will also be featured.
